"Visual Inheritance - How OOP works in Windows.Forms"
By Kathleen Dollard

Windows Forms

Take yourself and your Windows applications to a whole new level – move to .NET!
Move to the most modern environment available for building rich Windows applications to solve your business needs. Discover many exciting new possibilities available to you which revolve around OOP principles in User Interface design and development.

Kathleen will show us how to provide consistent behavior by deriving from our own base form plus some of the pitfalls to avoid when working with visual inheritance. Together, we will look at how easy it is to derive your own controls – both to add functionality and to combine multiple controls into a reusable unit. Then take a step back and look at how to design an OOP hierarchy that supports our user interface goals.

Code examples will be in Visual Basic .NET, but all topics are also applicable to Visual C# .NET. Discuss with us the awesome power of Windows.Forms!

 TOPIC

"Taming the ASP.NET WebForms DataGrid Control"
By Roy Ogborn, Orbonyx Corporation

The WebForms DataGrid Control is designed to display data directly from your ADO.NET Datasets onto your web pages without much thought or effort. The DataGrid can also easily display data directly from your application's custom business objects. But what if you want your DataGrid to completely change the columns it displays based upon user input? What if you have decided to disable ViewState on the DataGrid because ViewState is eating too much bandwidth? Now, what if your users want to click column headings to sort the DataGrid rows? With ViewState disabled, your DataGrid's sort events no longer fire. Oops!

Roy is a highly experienced custom applications developer who has been professionally architecting and developing enterprise grade VB.NET and C# object oriented n-tier applications for clients since the release of .NET Beta 2. And he's been otherwise immersed in .NET since it's pre-beta release of July, 2000. He's also provided .NET guidance to both individuals and development teams who are embarking on .NET and object oriented development projects. In this session, Roy will show us how to create DataGrids on the fly and how to get DataGrid events to fire properly when ViewState is disabled. Please join Roy on the wild ride "Taming the ASP.NET WebForms DataGrid Control".

Code samples presented in this mini-series are generally available for free download from http://www.Orbonyx.com.

Microsoft .NET Moving to .NET - .NET Explained

Time to market, reducing costs, and increasing revenues are important considerations for any organization. Microsoft has embarked on a vision of how to connect customers and organizations together through the .NET. You might be wondering: So, what is .NET? How will it affect my organization? What new business opportunities and changes are in store if I go with .NET? What are Web Services, and how will they change the way I do business? If so, this seminar will answer these questions and more, don't don't miss it.

New Lab Leader Needed - WE NEED YOU!

The king is dead! Long live the king! Well, maybe our turn of events is not quite as dramatic as all that; however, we are short one Lab co-coordinator!

As you know, Dirk  Kittredge has been sharing the Lab co-coordinator tasks with James Hansen since the first of this year. We thank them both for their extensive volunteer efforts. Unfortunately for us, Dirk's new job requires a considerable amount of travel and has left him no other alternative but to resign this lofty position with us.

To help James and your fellow members, volunteer to help co-coordinate our Labs. Big things are happening in our Labs (stay tuned for more later) -- don't miss this really great opportunity! Contact me, Chris Wallace, cawallace1@earthlink.net, or James Hansen, Astarii@4dvision.net to discuss the possibilities! Think it over, volunteer now!

Thanks to those who voted in our recent survey of members.

We asked you to tell us who you wanted to present to us and what you wanted them to present, from the excellent Speakers Bureau brought to us as a member group benefit.

Our volunteer member Catherine Drake worked tirelessly to prepare, deliver, hand-out, count, and summarize all of the ballots from our last meeting and from her e-mail (if our Catherine lived in Florida, all their elections would go smoothly)! We have now determined your selections and have requested the speakers and topics you selected. We are planning now for a probable presentation date of February or March, 2003. Keep tuned here for updates as the plans are finalized. Send your personal thanks to Catherine at cvcdrake@hotmail.com.
