 TOPIC

  "Talkback to Microsoft – Visual C# .NET Q & A”

With the Microsoft Visual C# .NET Team from Redmond -
Eric Gunnerson and Darren Shou, Program Managers on the Visual C# team, plus
Prashant Sridharan, Product Manager for Microsoft Visual C#.

Be Sharp, C#

“More of a discussion, less of a presentation!” We will talk about:

What are your top 10 pain points in developing software using C#.
What makes your job harder than it should be?
What are the top 10 features you'd like to see in C#?
What feature would make you happier and more productive?

Please bring your own items to generate these lists. They will be taking the lists back to Redmond to help define future versions of C#.

We will also look at Advanced C# Programming Topics including the new runtime, the new library, and some new concepts. There are a number of confusing areas and here we attempt to bring clarity to a few that seem to be most confusing. We will cover classes vs. structs, object destruction, exception handling, and unsafe code.

Finally, we will engage in an Open C# Q&A session, bring your questions -- Ask away, and we'll do our best to answer! This is going to be good!

C# Introduction and Overview
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/techinfo/articles/upgrade/Csharpintro.asp

Microsoft Visual C# .NET Team from Redmond

Eric Gunnerson -- a Program Manager on the Visual C# team. He joined Microsoft in 1994, working on the Visual C++ compiler. A few years ago, he became the QA lead for the C# compiler, and a member of the C# Language Design Team, and recently moved from QA to Program Management (aka "the dark side"). Before coming to Microsoft, he was a developer for a large Aerospace company, a medium-sized database company, and a small system software company. He's the author of "A Programmer's Introduction to C#" and writes the MSDN column "Working with C#". When he isn't working, he likes to ski, cycle (both kinds), work on his house, and build microcontroller-based holiday light displays.

Darren Shou -- a Program Manager on the Visual C# team. Prior to joining Microsoft, he worked at ISI and Intel and majored in computer engineering and computer science at USC. Darren started his job at Microsoft as part of the Visual C++ team, before transitioning over to the Visual C# team. He spends most of his spare time snowboarding and climbing or just dreaming of good surf in southern California.

Prashant Sridharan -- the Product Manager for Microsoft Visual C#. In previous roles at Microsoft he was the Product Manager for Visual J++ 1.1, Visual J++ 6.0, Windows CE Tools, and Microsoft TV. This is his second stint with Microsoft having spent a year in San Francisco as a Product Manager at Tellme Networks, Inc. Prior to Microsoft, he was a software engineer at Sun Microsystems in Mountain View, CA and the MITRE Corporation in Washington, DC. He is the author of several Java programming books and in his dwindling spare time is a great bartender, aspiring screenwriter, and lousy hockey player.

Moving to .NET

     Microsoft .NET
          Moving to .NET
Last month, just before our meeting, we sponsored a special event for IT Managers, Decision Makers, and Architects. We are planning our next such event just before our February 24, 2003 meeting.

Like our last event, this next event will not be geared toward application program developers either. See last month's event:
http://www.denvervisualstudio.net/Messages/Special2002/Special10212002.htm

You Can Help Us! - We want to present your "Moving to .NET" story during this next event!

Do you have a .NET story? Successful or Challenging? We are looking for real-world experiences where we can talk frankly about the benefits you found as well as any war stories from which you learned. We are talking about how your business needs were answered by using .NET development technologies like Visual Studio .NET.

We are not talking about code or feature sets. No power point slides. No prepared presentation. We envision that Mel Harris and Chris Wallace will lead an introduction to your business problem, a discussion on your use of .NET to solve this business problem, and a Q & A session with the limited selected audience of IT Managers, Decision Makers, and Architects to showcase your "Moving to .NET."

Time to market, reducing costs, and increasing revenues are important considerations for any organization. Microsoft has embarked on a vision of how to connect customers and organizations together through the .NET. We want to test these issues by looking at how you have actually implemented a .NET solution. How did training go? How long did it take? How are you planning to implement .NET in the future, based on your experiences?

We need your help to inform us about the experiences you have had! We want to talk to you about your experiences during this event. We are also looking to include your business client in the entire event. We are looking for the fundamentals of your experiences, so the industry and the uniqueness of your business is not critical. No internal business or technology secrets need to be revealed and no proprietary processes need to be disclosed - this is a generic view.

We are looking at the issues you faced and how you solved them as you "Moved to .NET" plus
how your solution may have been different than in the past.

We need to start planning NOW for this event. Contact Mel to discuss your .NET story,
Mel Harris jmel@jncd.com

 Special Event - Jeff Prosise

Mark your calendars and watch this space - we are planning another special event!

Planned date: Wednesday, January 15, 2003, 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. at Microsoft DTC.

Nationally known speaker, Jeff Prosise, will speak to us on
ASP.NET Web Security.

This will not be a regular user group meeting, but an additional special event for Jeff’s presentation. We still plan to have our regular meeting on Monday, January 27. Everyone is welcome to attend, including other user groups or anyone else. You will be notified by e-mail and on the web site when details are set.

“Jeff Prosise makes his living programming Microsoft .NET and teaching others how to do the same. His latest book, Programming Microsoft .NET, was published by Microsoft Press in May 2002. In addition to writing books for Microsoft Press, Jeff serves as a contributing editor to MSDN Magazine, where he writes feature articles and authors the Wicked Code column. A former engineer who discovered after college that programming is immeasurably more fun than designing lifting fixtures and computing loads on mounting brackets, Jeff cofounded Wintellect, www.wintellect.com, to provide training and consulting services to .NET developers the world over. TOPIC AREAS: Primary: ASP.NET (Web Forms, Web services, Web controls, Web security, etc.) Secondary: .NET Framework (Technical overviews, FCL, Windows Forms, ADO.NET, multithreading, remoting)”

 New Lab Location, Hensmann Technology!

Hensmann Technology Learning and Education Center      We have recently been offered a new location to use as our Lab venue which will provide us the opportunity to use the current Microsoft .NET developer technology. We have finalized our plans to move our Lab location from the Parsec Group to Hensmann Technology, the home of our Visual Studio .NET Practical Skills Course which is now running two six month sessions concurrently.

New Labs begin Friday, January 24, 2003, 7:00 p.m. For details see:
