"Reflections on Reflection.NET
By David Ring, Chief Web Architect, IntraMagic
Reflection allows your program to learn the classes, properties and methods of an assembly it has never encountered before. Visual Studio.NET does just that when you reference a third party assembly dll. But the real fun starts when you dynamically change the code in the assembly and save it back to the dll! David will show examples using System.Reflection and System.Reflection.Emit.

Have you been puzzled by .NET Reflection and wondered not only what it is, but why you might need it? It sounds mysterious, but David will describe Reflection and show you how you can use this new tool in your next .NET application.

GotDotNET - BUILDING UPON THE FRAMEWORK

Got Dot NET

"Understanding the .NET Framework is the Key!"

The Key opens the Visual Studio .NET door. Each month this series presents a short technical topic of interest to developers on how to get the most out of the vast .NET Framework, with code samples in Visual Basic .NET and Visual C# .NET.
 Topic
"Graphics Programming with the .NET Framework - A Look at GDI+"
By Robert Brand, N-Vision Inc.
Add a little “pizzazz” to your programming -- allow the Van Gogh or Michelangelo in you to be obvious in your next .NET application!

See what you can do with GDI+ in .NET! Learn how to get a canvas for your work from Windows or how to create your own. Then create your pens and brushes with the color and texture you need for your creative work. Using your pens and brushes, draw and fill on your canvas. Writing and formatting text on your canvas is just as easy. Now, save your new "Whistler’s Mother" for prosperity. Bob will take you through all of these steps -- you can then supply the inspiration for your own work of art.

Don't think you are a Van Gogh? There is still something for you! Bob, using a few simple methods from 4 of the 6 namespaces in the Drawing Assembly, will show you that even a non-artist can take a mundane chart and add some “pizzazz” to it, making your work truly professional!
Code samples presented in our GotDotNET series are generally available for free download from http://www.Orbonyx.com.

  "Component Oriented Technical Architecture"
By David Hale, Select Business Solutions
Why is this important to you, the .NET architect and developer? How do the basic principles of Component Oriented Technical Architecture become "must haves" as you build your .NET application?

David will present an outline of these basic principles to you -- the .NET architect and developer. He will provide you views into the analysis, design and development of reusable patterns and components within the .NET environment while using a development toolset.

At the end of this fast paced presentation, you will know why these basic principles are important to you! Immediately following, David and Chris, both from Select Business Solutions, will be available during our Networking Break to discuss these basics.

Your Name Goes Here, MCAD

Our first two Visual Studio .NET Practical Skills courses are almost completed and our students are looking forward to their next challenge - Microsoft .NET Certification! We will cover three major topics at the session on February 1 about your future.

General Q & A - This general question and answer session will be about Microsoft .NET developer certification (MCSD and MCAD), lead by Rick Gibson. Rick has been our primary instructor for the Visual Studio .NET Practical Skills courses and has an alphabet soup of certification letters behind his name including: MCSD, MCDBA, MCSE, MCT (plus Cisco and Oracle Certifications). Rick knows certification - he has been there and back with more than 25 years of training experience. He will answer all of your questions. Please review the Microsoft certification links below for a great basic understanding of certification. Let's throw the really tough certification questions at Rick.
Hensmann Technology Certification Classes - Hensmann Technology will be offering some certification classes (C# .NET and Visual Basic .NET) in the near future, see above. They will be discussing their curriculum, dates, and costs. In addition, tour the home of our .NET practical skills courses and the new home of our User Group monthly Labs. Explore their training facility and meet some of the Hensmann staff. Experience why Hensmann Technology is the .NET User Group education partner.
Talk with Other Certification Bound Members - Meet other members who want to pursue certification. Consider with them the creation of a “study group” (C# .NET or Visual Basic .NET). Take advantage of the opportunity to meet with other .NET User Group members to exchange contact information and ideas. You always knew there were other people in the group who wanted to do this – now is your opportunity to meet them!

The Bottom Line

If you are interested in becoming Microsoft certified in the .NET developer technologies, you need to come to this meeting on certification, February 1! We look forward to seeing you there!

If you can not attend or if you have any questions or comments, please contact Tim Stageberg at tvStageberg@Duke-Energy.com, he will pass your message on to the appropriate person.

For specific questions regarding the class, schedule, cost and to register, see Hensmann for more details and other updates: : Call Laura Edwards, 303-832-4665.

MOVING TO .NET

     Microsoft .NET
          Moving to .NET
Recently, just before our meeting, we sponsored a special event for IT Managers, Decision Makers, and Architects. We are planning our next such event just before our February 24 or March 24, 2003 meeting.
Like our last event, this next event will not be geared toward application program developers either. See our last Moving to .NET event:
http://www.denvervisualstudio.net/Messages/Special2002/Special10212002.htm

You Can Help Us NOW! - We want to present your "Moving to .NET" story during this next event!

Real Stories from Real Customers Building Real Applications.

Do you have a .NET story? Successful or Challenging? We are looking for real-world experiences where we can talk frankly about the benefits you found as well as any war stories from which you learned. We are talking about how your business needs were answered by using .NET development technologies like Visual Studio .NET.

We are not talking about code or feature sets. No power point slides. No prepared presentation. We envision that Mel Harris and Chris Wallace will lead an introduction to your business problem, a discussion on your use of .NET to solve this business problem, and a Q & A session with the limited selected audience of IT Managers, Decision Makers, and Architects to showcase your "Moving to .NET."

Time to market, reducing costs, and increasing revenues are important considerations for any organization. Microsoft has embarked on a vision of how to connect customers and organizations together through the .NET. We want to test these issues by looking at how you have actually implemented a .NET solution. How did training go? How long did it take? How are you planning to implement .NET in the future, based on your experiences?

We need your help to inform us about the experiences you have had! We want to talk to you about your experiences during this event. We are also looking to include your business client in the entire event. We are looking for the fundamentals of your experiences, so the industry and the uniqueness of your business is not critical. No internal business or technology secrets need to be revealed and no proprietary processes need to be disclosed - this is a generic view.

We are looking at the issues you faced and how you solved them as you "Moved to .NET" plus how your solution may have been different than in the past.

We need to start planning NOW for this event. Contact Mel today to discuss your .NET story,
Mel Harris jmel@jncd.com.
