Visual Studio -- ‘Get into Programming’ plus IDE Tips and Tricks!
with
Rod Stephens, Visual Basic MVP, Author, Speaker, Consultant
Rod Stephens, Visual Basic MVP, will help you ‘Get into Programming’ through a quick introduction to Visual Studio 2008.
He'll demonstrate how you can build forms that display information and that use controls to allow your user to interact with your application. He'll explain how you can use properties to control your program's appearance and behavior. He’ll show you how you can use events to let your program respond as your user clicks buttons, selects menu items, and otherwise fiddles with your program.
For a grand finale, Rod will show you how to build a complete database program in 30 seconds! Plus, he'll give a quick show-and-tell showcasing some of the remarkable things you can do with Visual Studio.
This talk does not require previous programming experience and beginners should get a decent head start at moving into Visual Basic or C# programming. For those of you who have some experience with VBA, VBScript, Visual Basic "Classic," or some other language, you will be able to concentrate more on the amazingly powerful Visual Studio integrated development environment (IDE) and how you can achieve particular tasks with this remarkable developer tool.

If you’re new to all of this, come and ‘Get into Programming.’

If you’re an experienced developer, come and learn from the master of the IDE to get the most out of your Visual Studio programming!

Note that Rod is known for bringing fabulous door prizes to give away at meetings! Well, perhaps not exactly fabulous, but he'll almost certainly bring a couple of books to give away.

 Rod Stephens

Rod Stephens started out as a mathematician but, while studying algorithms at MIT, discovered the joys of computer graphics and algorithms and he never looked back. He is a Microsoft Visual Basic MVP who has been a software consultant specializing in custom business software and user interface development for more than 22 years. During that time he has worked on an eclectic assortment of applications spanning topics such as cartography, fuel taxes, wastewater treatment, automated dispatching, ticket sales, and professional football coaching.
Rod is an accomplished speaker and author who has written 19 books that have been translated into a dozen or so languages. He has also written more than 250 articles in magazines such as "Visual Studio Magazine," "Visual Basic Developer," "Dr. Dobb's Journal," "Delphi Informant," and "J++ Informant."
He has been working with Visual Basic in all of its flavors (Visual Basic, VBA, VBScript, .NET) since Visual Basic 3, and has been using C# and Visual Basic .NET since their version 1 betas.
Rod's VB Helper Web site (http://www.vb-helper.com), which racks up about 7 million hits per month, contains more than 5,000 pages of tips, tricks, and example programs for Visual Basic developers. Bookmark it so you can quickly find the hints you need to get past that tricky piece of code and get moving again!
Contact Rod Stephens and see vb-helper.com.

 Hamid Shojaee

Axosoft founder, Hamid Shojaee, is a software industry veteran who, prior to starting Axosoft, lead software development teams at Microsoft, Intel and IBM.
It was as a Sr. Consultant with Microsoft that Hamid realized how common it was for even the brightest dev teams and managers to have difficulty answering basic questions about their software projects: Who's working on what? What's the status of this bug or that feature? When will the product be ready to ship?
To help teams stay on course and ship software on time, Hamid created OnTime. He was able to invest his project management and development experience into a product that would help dev teams function together in better harmony.
When OnTime v1.0 was publicly released as a free app, Hamid was overwhelmed by the response it received. People who were using OnTime were vocally enthusiastic about it -- they finally had a tool that "got it" and actually helped them get things done.
Axosoft was born. Today, Hamid actively manages and provides guidance in all areas of Axosoft's business. With his passions for Axosoft and OnTime strengthening, he also dedicates time as a speaker at software development conferences and functions as Axosoft's #1 OnTime evangelist.

“SQL Server Integration Services: ETL for the Enterprise”

During this session, Alan Campbell will provide insight into best practices with SQL Server Integration Services including: package configuration, auditing, error handling and reporting within a robust ETL environment. Alan will demonstrate solutions that promote portability and streamline ETL development on Enterprise projects.
Alan Campbell is a Principal BI Consultant for Neudesic based in Denver. Alan is a highly qualified consultant who has more than 16 years experience in IT and 12 years in Business Intelligence. Alan specializes in Business Intelligence, providing expertise in Solution Architecture, Data Modeling, ETL Processing, Multidimensional Modeling, Analytics, Scorecards and Reporting. Alan has an impressive background including numerous enterprise-level projects and a track record for turning challenging projects into successes. Alan brings a business-focused approach to Business Intelligence and enjoys working closely with business stakeholders and consultants to deliver breakthrough solutions in challenging environments.

“You did that with SQL Server Reporting Services?”

During this fun session, Mark Breen will demonstrate some of the unusual ways that SSRS has been used to solve actual business needs … from coordinating on-demand data loads; very precise fact sheets; letter generation; database updates for match-merge routines; to storing specific user profiles on how they want to see their customized report filters.
Mark Breen is a SQL/BI Consultant for Neudesic based in Denver. Mark has more than 20 years experience in IT with a focus on Business Intelligence. In Mark’s opinion, everything “starts with the data”. So he specializes in Data Modeling and then making that data available to maximize its usage. Mark was part of the team that won the 2006 Microsoft Global Partner Award in the Database Category. He works well at all levels in an organization, and is known for doing tricks with both Reporting Services and a pack of cards.
