Microsoft Office as a Developer Platform
Microsoft Office as a Developer Platform
with
Joe Shirey, Microsoft Senior Architect Evangelist
Over the years, Microsoft Office has evolved as a technology that can be used as a part of an application development effort. With the release of Office 2007 and Visual Studio 2008, there are a number of additional means for developers to leverage Office as part of their solutions.

We will focus on some of the new features of Office such as the Document Information Panel, the XML File Formats, changes to the Office User Interface, and a new version of Visual Studio Tools for Office.

Come and discuss how to best leverage these tools within your applications!

Dynamic Data
Dynamic Data
with Steve Dzilvelis, Senior Sales Engineer

Dynamic data denotes information that is asynchronously changed as further updates to the information become available.
The opposite of this is static data, which is literally a snap-shot of information at a particular point in time. Dynamic data is also different from streaming data, in that there is no constant flow of information. Rather, updates may come at any time, with periods of inactivity in between.

ASP.NET Dynamic Data provides a framework that enables you to quickly build a functional data-driven application, based on a LINQ to SQL or Entity Framework data model. It also adds great flexibility and functionality to the DetailsView, FormView, GridView, and ListView controls in the form of smart validation and the ability to easily change the display of these controls using templates.
In this lab, we'll be looking at the components of Dynamic Data, build an sample site, and show how to customize it in various ways.

Today’s applications need to do more than simply work. They need to draw in the user and provide a differentiated experience. This means moving beyond battleship gray forms boxy UIs and simple HTML forms, and providing a positive user experience. Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) and Silverlight 2 provide powerful capabilities to develop compelling user interfaces, on the client and in the browser, respectively.
At the heart of these rich applications is data. There are a growing number of choices of technologies available to access data, create database abstraction layers and expose data as services. Visual Studio 2008 (and .NET Framework 3.5) SP1 include the production release of the ADO.NET Entity Framework, ADO.NET Data Services, as well as some enhancements to the Web Programming model (REST-Friendly) in WCF.
In these sessions, Rob Bagby will examine the core concepts of WPF and Silverlight such as layout panels, data binding, styles and control templates, and will use them to develop an application UI from the ground up. Rob will further examine and demystify the options available to you to expose data to your rich applications.

The Rocky Mountain Windows Technology User Group (RMWTUG)
invites members of the Denver Visual Studio User Group
to its FREE Virtualization Mini-Conference in Denver on September 29, 2008.

Network and storage management functions will also be demonstrated.

Technologies at this Conference --

The main presentation will be performed with real servers, networking and storage infrastructure on the stage. On the stage will be four identical, large, name-brand servers (dual-Xeon, quad-core, large memory) along with enterprise-class networking and storage infrastructure including iSCSI and Fibre Channel storage. The servers will be running VMware ESX, Microsoft Hyper-V, and possibly other hypervisors.
