Roy Ogborn
of SharePointExtenders.com presented
SharePoint features in the upcoming 2010 release (possibly in June
2010 at the same time as MS Office 2010).
Roy showed the nice synergy between SharePoint 2010 and PowerShell,
with about 500 console commands available.
SharePoint 2010 code compiles to .NET 3.5 and may do so even when
VS 2010 is released; set .NET 3.5 as the target in your VS 2010
SharePoint project properties.
SharePoint 2010 is huge. Here are some notable features from both
Roy's talk and the
Microsoft SharePoint
site:
64-bit only
Office-like ribbon interface
several versions of the product including cloud versions
more social networking: personal blogs, wikis, tagging, activity
feeds
offline access
Silverlight support
better Visual Studio integration
read/write access to enterprise data
improved search via FAST Search Server 2010
embedded Office web apps for online editing of Office content
multi-lingual user interface
web standards and web accessibility compliance
can assign unique doc ID's that don't change when document is moved,
for permalinks
Can publish spreadsheets while blocking formulas
PerformancePoint Services in the enterprise product for dashboards,
scorecards, and key performance indicators
admins can control what can be altered using SharePoint Designer
REST access to lists using ADO.NET Data Services
in-place records management, can block updates to managed content
tagging can be controlled (taxonomies) or open and informal (folksonomies)
SharePoint 2010 supports AJAX |

Roy Ogborn is a well known applications architect and
developer in the Denver Metro area. He has been a speaker
here at our Denver Visual Studio User Group many times in
the past, including the Office 2007 Community Launch and the
GotDotNet Building Upon the Framework series.
He began diving into the SharePoint
API back in 2006 when the first public MOSS Beta was
released. Since then he’s designed and built
|
| |
several applications (SharePoint
Features) for clients that extend SharePoint’s already huge
capabilities. One of these applications is a Silverlight 3.0
based industrial Carbon Assessment and Planning app that
runs within SharePoint 2007 for a global engineering firm.
He is an applications design architect and developer who has
been specializing in Microsoft technologies since before
.NET was first released. He excels at creating object
oriented designs for business and engineering. He has
expertise in the CSLA and CSLA Light application development
frameworks and is also the technical editor for Joe Mayo’s
upcoming book on Visual Studio 2010 which will be published
by McGraw-Hill later this year. |

Roy is passionate about his work and he’s excited to
show some of the many new developer extensions and
tools Microsoft has incorporated into SharePoint
2010 to increase your productivity as a Developer
and he believes you’ll be exited to try them out
yourself.

initially recruiting consultants with .NET expertise and in the
future will probably be adding permanent staff with .NET expertise.

Introduction to
F# and Functional Programming
with
Brad Wood,
Software Developer |
|
| |
| |
F# is a
highly productive .NET programming language combining
functional programming and object-oriented programming, and
is ideally suited for parallel, algorithmic, technical and
explorative development.
F# is the
result of a close partnership between Microsoft Research and
the Visual Studio team. Since announcing F# in Visual Studio
2010 we’ve seen a surge of interest and uptake in the
language. The F# team has also worked closely with the F#
community and major adopters to ensure it meets the needs of
professional software developers working in these domains --
like YOU!

Notes from
Lab |
|
| |
|
| |

Contributors: Martin

and Chris Wallace.
Brad introduced several of us to
Microsoft's very interesting functional programming language, F#,
well summarized in the F# spec as:
F# is a scalable, succinct, type-safe,
type-inferred, efficiently executing
functional/imperative/object-oriented programming language. It aims
to be the premier typed functional programming language for the .NET
framework and other implementations of the Ecma 335 Common Language
Infrastructure (CLI) specification. F# was partly inspired by the
OCaml language and shares some common core constructs with it.
Brad showed us sample code including
the Towers of Hanoi problem solved in F#. Previously a separate
download, the language is fully integrated into Visual Studio 2010
as Visual F# while still available for earlier versions of Visual
Studio as a download.
Brad also described how functional
programming focuses on defining values once and providing a rich set
of functional, mathematical, and data structure operations; while
discouraging and avoiding variable assignment and side effects. F#,
like most functional languages, can manipulate variables and produce
side effects, but with different syntax than what you are used to in
imperative languages.
Brad covered many F# features,
including lightweight syntax (using indentation for scope), strong
typing, type inference, functions as first class objects,
generalized pattern matching on lists and trees, range operators,
various data structures, workflows, and support for asynchronous and
parallel operations. Some of the common functional programming terms
that baffle the non-initiated were presented as well: monads,
closures, lambda, and currying.
After attending Brad's lab, I spent a
few hours reading and skimming the
F# specification.
The 207-page spec is often hard to understand even for someone who
has read many other language specifications, perhaps because large
sections of it are devoted to topics of more interest to the
compiler implementer or spec writer, such as seven pages about name
resolution.
Probably more accessible is Don Syme's
upcoming book,
Programming F#: The
Definitive Guide.
Thanks to Brad for sparking our
interest in this very interesting programming tool now in Visual
Studio. |
