Presentations

Contributors: Martin Buchanan and Chris Wallace.

Ely Lucas showed us how to build a web application in 30 minutes, using Entity Framework 4, MVC2, and JQuery. Ely referenced the CodeFirst approach now supported by Entity Framework (v. ModelFirst or DataFirst), which supports POCO's (plain old CLR objects). He also used the PowerToys extensions for VS2010. He showed us data annotation attributes (e.g., for a required field, or to indicate a field's maximum length). Various JQuery UI widgets, including a nice date widget, were used. VS 2010 keyboard shortcuts helped him get the app done quickly.

William Wegerson of OmegaCoder.com and a C# MVP described and showed new VS2010 features, including a UI written in WPF, multi-monitor support, better zoom, improved docking, an extension manager able to find extensions on the Internet, Architecture Explorer (only in the Ultimate edition), Microsoft Parallel Samples, exporting and importing breakpoints, backwards debugging with Intellitrace, test driven development, and performance tools. One such tool is the concurrency visualizer, and William did a great demo showing the performance of a multi-threaded program running on 12 cores.

  5280 Solutions
Domain-driven Development and the Large Financial Enterprise
with Chris Rybitski,
IT Director and Vice President of Web Platforms, 5280 Solutions

Heterogeneous customer and financial sub-systems contained in multiple operating environments present unique challenges for software engineers. Disparate data sources and types, transactional considerations, and platform differences are just some of the common challenges.

There's no such thing as a "silver bullet" system, and often times the systems you're working with were not designed with large-scale integration in mind. Having your enterprise present one or more "logical views" of data can be time consuming and costly if approached in a loose or siloed manner.

Leveraging the use of domain-aware software frameworks designed to act as the glue-that-binds can often overcome many of these challenges, and offers the ability to lower your cost of development and deployment over time.
